Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on December 13, 1983.

The arms are a combination of the arms of the Priory of Maxent, part of the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur Redon, and those of Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642).

The arms of the Priory of Maxent are described as in silver a chalice gules accompanied by four crosses trefoil of the same, two in chief and two in point.

The arms of Armand-Jean du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu, are silver with three chevrons gules. The cardinal was abbot commendatory of the abbey Saint-Sauveur Redon from 1622 to 1642. The cardinal abbot was not resident but received the benefits. His arms are shown on a glass roof of the old church in Maxent.
