The city initially used the golden lion on black taken from the Lords of Plauen, who ruled most of the Vogtland area in medieval times, see f.e [[Auerbach (Vogtland)]] and [[Plauen]].  in the 14th century the city became a possession of the Wettin family as part of the Margraviate of Meissen. Ever since the city uses the arms of the Margraviate, a black lion on gold.
