ILMAJOKI

Region : Etelä-Pohjanmaa
Former province : 1997-2009 Länsi-Suomi (until 1997 Vaasa)

Ilmajoki Kuntavaakuna / Kommunvapen

Official blazon

Katkoisen kilven hopeisessa yläkentässä musta karhunpää edestäpäin. Sinisessä alakentässä kaksi hopeista puunuijaa ristissä, niiden alakulmassa jalkajousen muotoinen hopeinen puumerkki; jousen kaksikaarteinen virittäjä vastapalkeittain tukin päällä, yläpää kiinni jänteessä

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 25, 1950.

The arms show in the upper half a bear's head taken from the old parish seal. The base shows two clubs and a symbol, both refer to Jaakko Ilkka, a local lensmann involved in the Nuijasota (Swedish: Klubbekriget; English: Club War), a farmers’ revolt of 1596-1597 in which he was one of the main leaders. The symbol in the base was (due to scarcity of written documents from the age) long thought to be his personal house mark, but in late 1990s it was discovered that it actually belongs to Yrjö Kontsas, another revolt leader.
