SOLSONA'

Region : Catalonia
Province : Lleida

Solsona.jpg

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The traditional arms of Solsona show the local castle (named Castellvell, or Old Castle), a cross (an allusion to the monastery of Santa Maria, later cathedral and centre of an important bishopric) and the golden thistle taken from the canting arms of the viscounty of Cardona, where the town belonged to (a thistle being a "card" in Catalan). Usually the arms of Solsona show also a sun, an identifying canting element (the sun is named "sol" in Catalan).
