Origin/meaning

The large district of Zabrze received city rights in 1915 and at the time changed its name to Hindenburg, after the great German general of the time. The arms were granted on May 7, 1927 and show a castle with a machine wheel, indicating the industry of the city. After 1945 the city was renamed to Zabrze again.

In 1945 the arms were abolished. Only in 1960 new arms were designed and granted on February 2, 1960. These arms (shown below) show the eagle of Upper Silezia with symbols for industry (hammer) and arm (laurel branch).

On September 26, 1990 the old arms from 1927 were restored.
