The arms were granted on November 17, 1995.

The lion is the lion of Meissen, as the largest part of the district historically belonged to Meissen. The three bends symbolise the Zwickauer Mulde, Chemnitz and Zschopau rivers in the district.

Literature : Linder and Olzog, 1996.
