The arms were officially granted on December 21, 1999.
The chief shows a mural decoration, for which the local craftsmen were famous since the 18th century. The round fortress symbolises the many castles and fortresses in the region.
The wavy base symbolises the Afife river and the Atlantic Ocean, which have been of great importance for fishing in th epast and tourism at present.
