Arms (crest) of Antsla

Official blazon

Sinisel kilbil kuldne tõstetud tiibadega haugas.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 14, 1938.

Canting arms, a hawk is 'haugas' in Estonian. According to local legend there was earlier a borough named Hauka (but this fact is disputed).

Founded on May 1, 1938, the local administration asked for the hawk as their arms, which were granted on September 14 of the same year. The official document of the President's decision was made in 1940, but this was never officialised because of the Soviet occupation. The arms were reinstalled in the 1990s.
