Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1769 when Pirmasens received city rights from Count Ludwig IX of Hessen-Darmstadt. At the same time a seal was devised showing a fortress with the lion of Hessen standing on two thunderbolts on the main tower, and surrounded by birds. This complicated and non-heraldic composition was transferred into more proper arms and granted on October 24, 1845 by King Ludwig I of Bayern. These were the arms as shown above. The city was simplified and the birds removed. The arms, however, were not properly described, so many versions of the arms have been used since.
