Vilagrassa.jpg

Official blazon

Escut caironat quarterat en sautor: 1r i 4t d'atzur, 5 besants d'argent en creu; 2n i 3r d'or, 4 pals de gules. Per timbre, una corona mural de vila.

Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 16th January 1998.

The arms show five bezants Argent on Azure (a traditional element on the arms of Vilagrassa) and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or), that remind the jurisdiction of Catalan kings over the town. Vilagrassa was given its municipal charter by king Alfons I in 1185, and Pere III granted to the town the privileges of having a yearly fair (in 1301) and a weekly market (in 1328).
