PANEVĖŽYS DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY

County : Panevėžys

Panevezd.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 27, 1995.

The first attempt for arms for the district were taken in 1837 when the Governor of Vilnius, to which the district belonged, applied for arms at the court in St. Petersburg. The original application combined the arms of the Vilnius province, with a plough in the lower field. In 1844 this was changed into a plough iron instead of the whole plough, These arms did not survive long, as in 1845 the area was transferred to the Kaunas province. The new arms showed in the upper part the arms of Kaunas (an obelisk) and in the lower the plough iron.

The arms from 1845

After the (first) independence of Lithuania in the 1920s the old arms were restored, except that the obelisk was changed into two flax sheaves, as a symbol for the linen industry. In 1969 the upper part was made red with the flax sheaves. In 1995 the original colours were restored and the plough was restyled and its colours better described.
