Escudo de Elche

Official blazon

Escut ovalat. Tallat. Al primer quarter, de gules una fortalesa del seu color, maçonada de sable i aclarida de gules. Al segon quarter, d’atzur un ara romana del seu color, amb la inscripció: SAL / AVG en dues línies. Al voltant de l’ara les inicials i amb lletres capitals d’argent : C I I A. Al tot bordura d’or amb la llegenda de sable: COLONIA IULIA ILLICE AUGUSTA. Sobre l’escut una figura femenina, vestida a la romana, amb una palma d’or en la mà dreta. Envoltant l’escut sendes branques de llorer, olivera i palma de sinople.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 27, 2003.

Elche was already a city in Roman, which is referred to with the historical castle. The letters mean Illice (Roman name of the city) Augusta Colonia Inmunis.

An older version of the arms (1970s) only showed only the lower part of the present arms:
