Origin/meaning

The blue background represents both the Sea of Galilee and the blue sky of Manitoba.

The open book represents the Word of God, to which Archbishop Goulet has dedicated his life through teaching Scripture.

The sheaf of wheat recalls the origins of the Goulet Family, whose ancestor Jacques Goulet, a miller from Normandel au Perche, in Orne, France, came to Beaupre, Quebec, where he and his young wife Marguerite Mullier, settled in the Spring of 1646. As well, the sheaf represents Mantioba's wheat and is symbolic of the Eucharist.

The Word of God and the Eucharist are among the devotions dearest to the heart of Jean-Jacques Olier, founder of the Company of Priests of St. Sulpice.

The letters A and M, the first letters of the "Ave Maria", which make up the monogram of the Sulpicians and call to mind the Virgin Mary, principal patron saint of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface, which is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

The wavy white border represents the Red River, on the shores of which Bishop Joseph-Norbert Provencher, first bishop of St. Boniface, established the first Catholic Mission in Western Canada.

The motto "DUC IN ALTUM", inspired by the reading of "Novo Millenio lneunte", one of the apostolic letters of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, is taken from the scene of the miraculous catch of fish as told in the Gospel according to St. Luke. One morning, on the shore of the Lake of Genesaret, Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to "put out into deep water" to fish. "Due in Altum" (Lk 5:4). The Lord's command challenges the faith of Simon, who has worked hard all night long and caught nothing. However, he does recognize that the word of Jesus is all powerful and that it can accomplish what human forces cannot. "But if you say so, I will lower the nets." Simon's faith is not let down: "They caught a large number of fish "And Jesus says to Simon: "Do not be afraid. From now on you will be catching men."
