Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 14, 1957.

The arms show (parts of) the arms of families or areas that ruled part of the district. The first quarter shows the arms of the Lords of Ahaus, which can also be seen in the arms of the city of Ahaus. The second quarter shows the arms of the Von Lohn family. The swan is the arms of the Lords of Steinfurt. The fourth quarter shows the arms of the State of Münster, which also owned large parts of the district.
