Origin/meaning

The arms are traditional. There is no formal grant on record.

Friedberg is in North Eastern Styria, at the old road over the Wechsel pass and near the border to the Austrian state of Lower Austria. Thus, the old Austrian arms - Gules, a fess Argent - in the municipal arms can be explained. In addition, the borough of Friedberg answered to the Landesfürst directly. The Landesfürst has always (well - for more than 600 years) been a member of the Habsburg family, the Casa de Austria.

The two hands symbolize Frieden (peace) and make the coat of arms a canting one. Originally, however, Friedberg meant "protection (at the) mountain". The meaning of "Fried" has changed over the centuries.
