Origin/meaning

As common in US ecclesiastical heraldry, the arms show the arms of the Archdioces impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The blue cross fleury is taken from the arms of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis, where the Archbishop served 24 years as a priest. The golden crescent is taken from the arms of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, where the Archbishop served 10 years as Bishop.

The winged bull is the symbol of St. Luke, and thus a canting element. The red colour is taken as a symbol for St. George.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of archbishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
