Official blazon
Per saltire argent and gules, a cross bottonnée between in chief a Saxon crown and in base an orb Or; on a chief sable a lion passant between a mitre and a crosier erect of the third.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on June 7, 1950.
The cross, crown and orb refer to King Æthelstan, from whom Malmesbury received a charter in 924. The mitre, lion and crozier are from the insignia of Malmesbury Abbey, a religious house dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It was one of the few English houses with a continuous history from the 7th century through to the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
