Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 27, 1997.

The large reliquary in the center of the arms refers to the medieval Holy Miracle that took place in Santarém. The sword is a symbol for the liberation of Santarém from the Moors. The two gourds refer to the agricultural history and labour of the area. The wavy base symbolises the Tagus river.
