Origin/meaning

The first quarter shows a Celtic cross, indicating the Irish ancestry of the bishop. The bird in the second quarter is composed of three different birds; a dove to represent the Holy Spirit, a raven for Saint Benedict, and an eagle for Saint John the Evangelist. The base shows a bread basket and rolls to signify Catholic Social Services.

The third quarter shows a crown for the Queen City of Charlotte. The bar with eight ermine tails signifies dignity and the eight years the bishop was active in the Curaillo movement.

The fourth quarter shows a tower, taken from the Begley family arms. It also refers to the orphanage in Nazareth, where the bishop served as a director. Finally the tower also represents the titles of St. Mary as "Tower of David" or "Tower of Ivory".

The motto "Diligimus Fratres" (I love my brother) symbolises the bishop's love for others.
