Origin/meaning
On April 4, 1515 Leonard, Archbishop of Salzburg, confirmed the 'historical' arms of Mondsee. On March 27, 1567 Emperor Maximilian II granted Mondsee a patent of arms, which unfortunately is lost. In both cases the arms were identical to the composition also used on (older) seals of the town; a moon and two stars over a lake. These arms are canting, as the name means moon-lake. These arms are shown below. The arms were used at least until 1749 in seals and documents of the town.
In 1848 the arms were changed. The town took the arms of the former Mondsee Abbey, which dates from the middle of the 17th century (oldest known use from 1626). These arms also show a moon and a lake, but now with three people on boats. These arms were never officially granted to the town, but are still in use.
