The arms were granted on January 26, 1962.
The upper part shows the arms of the Markgraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, as they, and their predecessors, ruled the area from the 13th century until the 18th century. They were succeeded by the Bavarian Kings, and the lower part of the arms shows the arms of Bayern.
