Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 18, 1993.

The arms are derived from the 13th century arms of the Principality of Rügen, with the addition of a crown. The arms were first used around 1200. The meaning of the old arms is not known. After the Princes of Rügen became extinct in 1325, the arms were used as arms for the island and as such incorporated in the large arms of the different rulers of the island.

The arms were also used for the district until 1952, when the use of arms in the DDR was abolished. Only in 1993 the arms were restored.
