Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on July 30, 1928.

The county is named after the castle Steinburg built before 1307. It was the seat of the governor of the Amt Steinburg, one of the territories in Holstein. The three small shields represent the three old districts in the Amt Steinburg. The image of Christ is taken from the seal of the Wilstermarsch district, the Nesselblatt is the arms of Holstein, the swan is taken from the Krempermarsch district. The waves indicate that the Steinburg was a so-called water castle, or a castle surrounded by canals, and, at the same time, represent the Elbe river.
