Origin/meaning

The two Greek letters, Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end of the alphabet, signifying Christ who is the beginning and end, under the monogram Chi-Rho, which stands for Christus Rex. The six stars represent the six islands of the Netherlands Antilles that comprise the diocese, above the waves of the Caribbean Sea. The point and main star represent St. Mary.

The base shows three eel, to indicate the name Ellis, which is derived from a Scottish word for eel.
