The crest is a half-length figure of one of the Royal lions from the arms of King John, alluding to his journey to Swineshead after losing his treasure in the Wash. The lion is crowned with one of the blue crowns of the mermaid supporters of the [[Boston (Borough)|Borough of Boston]] arms, and the combination of lion and crown is also an allusion to Coronation year (the arms were granted in 1953, the coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II).
In the motto "Serve With Amity", there is a slight pun, for it contains the name of the river Witham which plays a considerable part in the life of the rural district.
