The arms show a letter Z, for the Zwin and the name of the waterboard. The bend is taken from the arms of the [[Brugse Vrije]], the governing body of the area for many centuries. The two horizontal bars symbolise the canals and other waterbodies that are connected to the Zwin.

The small crown refers to the influence of the Kings and Queens of Spain and Belgium on the water management in the area. For example the Isabellavaart (1656, named after Queen Isabella of Spain) and the Leopoldkanaal (1846, named after the Belgian King Leopold) refer to this.
The 'crown' on the shield refers to the willow fences historically used to strengthen the banks of the canals and ditches.
