Origin/meaning

Hofgeismar was first mentioned as a city around 1220/30, and the oldest seal of the city is known from 1234. It shows a church tower behind a city wall. A second seal from 1266 shows a tower, with in the portal the Archbishop of Mainz, and two small wheels, the symbol of the State of Mainz. The secret seal from 1300 shows some architecture around a single wheel. This was further stylised in the next seal, dating from 1418.

The present arms are based on this seal, in the colours of Mainz. Hofgeismar belonged to Mainz until 1583.
