The sun symboles Christ the Saviour of the world, the light of the world. The red rays signify the intensity of His love for His people. The three figures eprresent the three basic races of the north: Dene - Inuit and White.

The book, bread and cup are symbols of Christian Unity.

The whole design is surmounted by a cross, the symbol of salvation. Inside the cross is a star, representing Mary, the mother of Jesus and the patron saint of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the religious order of Bishop Denis Croteau. The star is also the Northern Star.
