Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on March 15, 1962.

The six martlets on the gules and azure chevron are taken from the arms of East Sussex and West Sussex, as are the 'Saxon Crowns' for the Kingdom of the South Saxons.

The Dolphin is taken from the arms of Brighton, as are the entwined dolphins on the crest, within another Saxon Crown .

The Dexter supporting Pelican carries a banner showing the Cinque Ports Lion and Ship symbol for Hastings in Sussex was the Senior Cinque Port.

The Supporters are standing on Books, representing Knowledge, as does the Motto.
