The arms were officially granted to the city by Emperor Maximilian I in 1497. The two crossed keys, the symbol of St. Peter, however, are used by the city since at least 1338. The oldest seal shows two crosiers, symbolising the Bishops of Basel, as the city was granted city rights in 1312 by Bishop Gerhard of Basel. In a later seal the city arms appear.
