The arms were officially granted on November 28, 2007.

The elements refer to the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers at Oarba de Mureș, and the obelisk represents their eternity, marked by the two silver stars located on either side of the obelisk.

The lightning suggests the eternal light that the Divinity pours on the place and on those who have sacrificed themselves in faith.

The wavy bar represents the Mureș River that crosses the city of Iernut and fertilizes this land.

The mural crown with three crenellated towers means that the town has the status of a city.
