Origin/meaning

The arms show a Roman knight with the head of St. John Baptist, the local patron saint. The tower probably refers to the local castle.

In a document from 1610 it is already stated that the seal of the city uses the knight holding the head for at least 100 years, but historical seals do no longer exist.
