The blue field and golden eagle is taken from the arms of an Irish Dunn afmily and are used here to symbolise the family name of the bishop. The eagle is also the symbol of St. John, one of his patron saints. The eagle holds a Paschal candle signifying Christ as light of the world. The candle has the letetr A and Ω for Christ and a cross with the five wounds of Christ. These also symbolises St. Francis of Assisi, his main patron saint.

The wavy division line symbolises the Mississippi river. the centre of the chief shows a symbol of marriage, between two lilies for the couple St. Joseph and St. Mary. This all symbolises that the bishop was archdiocesan director of the Family Life Programme.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
