===Origin/meaning===
Northeim received city rights before 1250. The oldest seal is known since the late 13th century and shows, as do all later seals, a castle on a small mountain, with a lion in the base of the shield, and the town's initial on the main tower. The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, who ruled the city for many centuries. In the early 18th century the two smaller towers were added.
