Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 4, 1913 by the Grand-Duke of Oldenburg.

Delmenhorst grew around a castle of the Counts of Oldenburg and received city rights in 1371. The oldest seal dates from 1422 and already shows a castle in front of the river Delme, as well as a small shield with the arms of Oldenburg. The small shield disappeard in the second and later seals. The 17th centruy seals showed the tower pointed to the upper right corner.

In his work Deutsche Ortswappen, Hupp showed initially the arms as on the 17th century seals, but later corrected it to the proper arms, see below.
