Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on January 8, 1912.
The oldest seal of the town dates from 1262 and shows the bishop of Paderborn with scepter and book. The town at the time belonged to the State of Paderborn. A second seal shows a castle with on a plate the head of St. John Baptist. A third seal shows the head of the patron saint under the eagle of Arnsberg. This composition remained in use until 1912 when the head was placed in a chief.
