The anchor is the symbol of Hope. The crescent is the symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception and a plea for her intercession.

The chief bears the arms of the Society of St. Columban, of which the Bishop was a member. A gold Celtic cross on a field of green commemorates the establishment of the Columban Fathers in Ireland in 1917.
The dove in the center of the cross has a triple significance. It is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. It recalls the outpouring of God’s love on all mankind. In addition, it recalls and honors St. Columban whose name is derived from “columba,” the Latin word for dove.
The motto “In Viam Pacis” is taken from the Gospel of St. Luke: “To shine on those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:79).
