Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 10, 1960.

The district is made up of different older landscapes. Part of the area was ruled by the Princes of Pfalz-Neuburg, another part by the Bishop of Eichstätt and a third area was part of the county of Ansbach. These three parts are represented in the arms of the district. The lion is the lion of the Pfalz, the crosier represents the bishops and the quartered shield is the arms of the Hohenzollern dynasty as Counts of Ansbach.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
