Origin/meaning

Westerland received city rights in 1905 and the arms were granted on February 27, 1907.

The lighthouse is the symbol of the city, and also a symbol for the importance of shipping for the city. The waves symbolise the North Sea. The small shield shows the old 18th century arms of the island of Sylt, on which the city is situated. The seal showed a divided shield with a blank upper half and a herring in the lower half. The herring, Sild, is a canting symbol for the island.
