Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The spearheads in the personal arms represent the instrument by which Saint Thomas, the baptismal patron of the bishop was martyred. They 'guard' the Chi-Rho monogram of Christ, which symbolises the ten years which Bishop Mardaga gave to the apostolate for Christ in the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and in the Catholic Youth Organization.

The origin of the eagle I do not know. The red lozenge with the giffin head refers to the family name of the mother of the Bishop, Ryan, and is derived from the arms of a Ryan family. The two stars are derived from the arms of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. The stars are also a reference to St. Mary.

The blue field is a reference to the arms of Lawrence Joseph Shehan, under whom he served as an auxiliary bishop.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
