The above arms are based on the 18<sup>th</sup> century seal of the local council. The arms are derived from the arms of the Valdez family. In 1620 Don Gaspard de Valdez, a Spanish nobleman, acquired the estate of Herdersem. His family remained in possession of the estate until the late 18<sup>th</sup> century.
