Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 11, 1427 by Prince Friedrich I of Brandenburg. The document, however is lost, so the oldest known coloured image dates from 1581.
The deer (Reh) is a canting element. The small shield is the arms of Hohenzollern. The small shield supposedly was not granted in 1427, and was thus added later that century or in the 16th century. When the city became Bavarian, the black and white of Hohenzollern had to be changed in blue and white of Bayern. This was restored in the old colours in the beginning of this century.
The arms in an album from around 1910
The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925
The arms in an album from 1968
The arms in the Die Wappen der Heimat album
