STATE or ELECTORATE OF KÖLN (953-1803)

Wappen von State of Köln/Arms (crest) of State of Köln
Official blazon
German (de)

Origin/meaning

The State of Köln, or more correctly the Electorate of Cologne (Kurfürstentum Köln, Kurköln) was the territory directly ruled by the Archbishops of Köln from 953-1803.

The territory was afterwards part of the Kingdom of Westfalen and Grand-Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt. It is now part of the Nordrhein-Westfalen and Rheinland-Pfalz States.

The arms of the Archdiocese and thus the State of Köln showed a black cross in silver. These arms were already used by the Archbishops in the 13th century.
