La Granja d'Escarp was born as a farm of the monks of the monastery of Escarp (founded in 1213), that in the 14<sup>th</sup> century passed to the Montcada family, the marquises of Aitona. The arms of the Montcadas are the eight golden bezants on Gules, placed as two pales at each side.
