The arms show the Turó de Montagut (597 m), the hill where stands the castle of Montagut (11<sup>th</sup> century) and its church, Santa Maria del Cós; the village is nowadays on the plain, near the river Fluvià. The castle was part of the barony of Castellfollit de la Roca until 1599, when it became the centre of the county of Montagut.
