The arms are those of the Lords of Hünenberg, who ruled the village of Obermettmenstetten from 1346-1398. The village adopted the arms as village arms in the 16th century (the family was already extinct by that time). | |||
The family arms are known from seals of Gottfried von Hünenberg from 1385-1309. See also [[Hünenberg (Zug)|Hünenberg]]. | |||
The oldest known use of the arms by the village dates from 1521 when they appeared on a wooden decoration for the local church (although it has been speculated that the arms were added later). | |||
