Official blazon

Vihreässä kentässä hopeinen haaruristi, jonka ylähaarat salamakoroiset; saatteena yläkulmassa kultainen liekki.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 26, 1956.

The arms show the two rivers, Kemijoki and Ounasjoki, which merge in the municipality and which are both used for hydro-electric power. This is reflected by the upper part of the rivers. The golden flame refers to the beacons in the river that were used to announce enemies.

The arms were continued in 2006 by the new Rovaniemi municipality.
