In all the old emblems of this city, since its foundation in 1138, a millstone was depicted. | |||
The millstone refers to the numerous mills working in the past in this area; this activity was an important source of richness for the citizens and a service for the community. For extension it is a symbol of the prosperity of the ground. | |||
In 1570 a red Greek cross on a silver shield was added to the arms: a concession by the pope Pio V, grateful to Macerata for the participation of numerous people in the war against the Turks and at the Crusades since the 1188.<br/> | |||
