===Origin/meaning===
The municipality uses the motto "Fons fontanacum felicium ingeniorum scaturigo". The arms originally date from 1699 and are re-designed in 1927.
The arms originally date from 1699 and are re-designed in 1927.

I have no further information on the meaning or origin of these arms. Any additional information is welcome.
The arms represent a fountain called Fontaine des Quatre-Tias (Fountain of four pipes), which can still be seen in the city center of Fontenay-le-Comte. The city started to develop around a water source and a fountain, typical from the Renaissance style, was erected at the water source location in 1542.
