===Origin/meaning===
The arms originally date from 1699 and are re-designed in 1927.

The arms represent a fountain called Fontaine des Quatre-Tias (Fountain of four pipes), which can still be seen in the city center of Fontenay-le-Comte. The city started to develop around a water source and a fountain, typical from the Renaissance style, was erected at the water source location in 1542.

On the upper part of the fountain, there are the French arms and also the engraved motto with two salamanders (salamander was the official emblem of King François I).

The municipality uses the motto "Fons fontanacum felicium ingeniorum scaturigo".
